The topic of the panel in the Big Room at SKC on October 17 was one of the most attractive ones at the moment – food[:]
On Thursday, October 17, at 7 p.m, CPN organized another popular science panel, this time with food as a topic.
Genetically modified organisms implemented in the food industry could enable survival of the human kind in the following centuries. On the other hand, there have been many movements recently which stand for sustainable – organic – way of food production. This way, there might not be so many products, but they have more nutritional value.
On the World Food Day, the eminent experts for food, genetics and food production talked about number of challenges which we face in Serbia on daily basis: what is the quality of food we eat, is this food tested thoroughly, who makes a decision about its quality, is it organically sustainable or should we give up the GMO.
Professor Trbovic emphasized problems with GMO, mentioning that the corn, which was genetically modified in order to be protected from pests, has the gene with Bt poison, i.e. the pesticide which destroys pests. This corn contains poison which can harm humans if present in food.
Recently, there have been many movements initiated in order to support organic food production in Serbia. One of the topics at the panel was also the National Association for Organic Food Production in Serbia.
Human health depends on a quality of food to a high extent. Many people are allergic to some type of food and there are plenty obese people. Biochemistrist Voin Petrovic talked about certain allergenes in food.
