Metahousing

On the occasion of the World Science Day, the exhibition “Metahousing – the Village Past and Future Cities”, organized by the Center for the Promotion of Science and the Museum of the City of Belgrade was opened.[:]

The unusual exhibition created by Milos Spasic, the Curator of the Prehistoric Collection at the Museum of the City of Belgrade, had previously attracted great attention of the public in London. The exhibition opened in Serbia on November 10th, on World Science Day, at the Gallery of Science and Technology of the Serbian Academy of Science and Arts, at 2 Djure Jaksica Street.

“Metahousing” presents the most recognizable aspects of the Neolithic and modern architecture of Belgrade. It shows the village of Vinca in Stublinama with over 200 houses over the ground, segments of New Belgrade’s Block 21 – Sest kaplara and elements of the 21st century architecture – the future building of the Center for the Promotion of Science at Block 39.

This exhibition had its premier at the International Exhibition of Architecture and Design in London that took place from June 29th to July 15th, 2012. The event was part of a broader international cultural project of Culture Olympics, held in parallel with the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and joined several prestigious events in the world of art and culture.

The “Metahousing” exhibition will be opened until November 29th, 2012. Lectures on archeology and architecture, as well as creative workshops for children will be organized.

The exhibition raises some interesting questions:

  • Who built the exhibited houses?
  • Who used to live there in the past, and who lives there today?
  • How did living in those houses look alike in Neolithic times, and how does it look like today?
  • How were the relations between neighbors in the past, and how are they today?
  • How do the changes in society influence the house development and the environment?
  • What human needs do the houses; buildings and villages need to satisfy?
  • How and why are settlements born and how do they die?
