INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION AND PROJECTS

A General Overview

Since its founding in 2010, the Center for the Promotion of Science has been actively developing its international cooperation, through involvement in related European and global associations, participation in conferences and various events bringing together similar organizations, and the implementation of joint plans and programmes.

In parallel, we also started participating in project consortia and applications. The first project the Center participated in was the 2012 Researchers' Night under the title FRIEND2YOU, funded through the European Commission's FP7 programme. The project coordinator was the Faculty of Technical Sciences from Novi Sad. After this, the Center has significantly developed its cooperation, and actively participated and applied for project funding through various EU-funded programmes - FP7, LLP Comenius, Erasmus+, Creative Europe, COST and Horizon 2020.

Starting in 2014, the Center has become a regular participant in several projects dealing with diverse topics such as (in)formal education, implementation of the Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) concept, gender framework, ethics, interdisciplinary collaboration of scientists and artists... In the last two years, with a focus on scientific communication as an umbrella activity of CPN, the most represented projects are those focusing on science education, i.e. the modern STEM education model (STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Math).

In response to the demands of complex participation in projects and an increasing number of diverse activities, a Department for International Cooperation was formed in mid-2015 to integrate the application process, management and coordination of EU-funded projects, and to improve networking and contacts with related partners and associations.

In 2018, the Center for the Promotion of Science commenced work on 9 new projects which address a range of important social issues and focus on science education for all generations, linking art and science, research activities, but also climate change and artificial intelligence as topics shaping both our present and the future. Through these projects, the Center has received a budget worth half a million euros in total. Six projects received funding through the Horizon 2020 programme, with one each from Creative Europe, Erasmus+ and COST framework. The projects are run by organizations from Ireland, Austria, Germany, Poland, Belgium and Serbia, and in addition to numerous European partners, they also include partners from distant countries and cultures such as Japan, Canada, South Africa or Georgia.

At the time of writing (January 2019), the Center is a participating partner in a record 13 active European projects and initiatives. The total number of projects in which CPN has participated since the beginning of activities in the field of international cooperation and EU-funded projects is 32, which, considering the size of the Center and the number of employees and engaged staff, is a unique and exceptional result at the level of Serbia and the wider region.

Art+Science

The meeting point of science and art

Back in 2014, the Center for the Promotion of Science began to initiate, develop and support various activities bringing together art and science through its participation in the global European Digital Art and Science Network project (http: //eu.cpn.rs/realized_projects/artscience/). As a member of the network, the Center has contributed to the creation of the first sustainable, vibrant network, which can bring together and support the collaboration of creative minds coming from seemingly conflicting disciplines - art and science. This project brought together 8 cultural institutions across Europe and had 3 prestigious European scientific institutions as partners: CERN, the European Space Agency and the European Southern Observatory. art+science activities have proven to be important for the achievement of the Center's main mission - bringing science closer to the general public and increasing general scientific literacy.

The first major one-month event was held at Belgrade Cultural Centre in 2016. During the same period, the Center embarked on another interesting European project based on the combination of science and art called Quantum Music (http://eu.cpn.rs/realized_projects/quantum-music/), which connects the world of quantum physics with contemporary classical music. As of 2017, all related activities of the Center have been branded jointly as art + science. A major event, art+science 2017 (http://arhiva.artandscience.cpn.rs/), consisting of several exhibitions and many other parallel activities, was organized in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Ritopek and Kragujevac bringing together 25 local and international artists. An important part of the programme included a variety of educational content specifically developed for the occasion, such as workshops for primary school pupils and students of arts academies.

The 3rd and most ambitious edition of the art+science programme so far was held during November and December 2018. The purpose of first two events was to establish the art+science concept in Serbia, map the artists and institutions interested in these types of collaboration and creation, and launch educational activities which would further develop this concept locally. In 2018, the programme was focused and linked to the Center's programme activities dedicated to the maker culture. Art+science+makers programme (http://www.cpn.rs/artandscience/en/) was launched at several locations in Belgrade, including exhibitions at the Museum of Applied Arts and the Instituto Cervantes. The centrepiece of the programme was reserved for a two-day international conference (http://eu.cpn.rs/artsciencemakers-conference/), held at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts and Science Club Belgrade. The conference was particularly important because of a deeper insight into the concept and the potential for linking art and science, and its impact and importance for society as a whole. Under the auspices of maker concept, the relations between different actors in the field of art and science, and their activation in the function of constant dialogue with formal and non-formal education were analysed.

In parallel with the opening of the art+science+makers event, a brand new initiative was launched in Belgrade: European ARTificial Intelligence Lab (http://eu.cpn.rs/active_projects/european-artificial-intelligence-lab/). It is a three-year project which brings together 13 partner organizations coordinated by Linz-based Ars Electronica and supported by the largest scientific institutions and companies working in the field of artificial intelligence. Future activities of the Center in the field of art+science will be centred around artificial intelligence as the most significant technology of our time and at the same time the greatest social challenge ahead.

TeRRIFICA – Territorial RRI Fostering Innovative Climate Action

The objective of the TeRRIFICA project is to comprehensively integrate data, research and action in order to create a general overview of the climate change situation in mapped parts of Europe. Versatile approaches involving the widest range of citizens, local activists, researchers, decision-makers and other engaged individuals aim to provide comprehensive guidance to combat climate change, adapt to changing circumstances and anticipate future developments.

We face many challenges on a daily basis, such as the impact of new technologies, the imbalanced consumption of natural resources, population health or migration; these can be greatly influenced by research and innovation. The TeRRIFICA project builds on this position, with a view to analyzing the impact and proposing a new model dedicated to reducing the adverse effects of climate change.

Several cities and regions across Europe will serve as test sites for initial analysis, the mapping of climate impacts and consequent change, but also for good practices and activities implemented by governmental institutions, scientific and educational institutions, the NGO sector and professional associations, individuals and dedicated organizations.

The project will create a specially developed set of recommendations and applicable practices for each of the selected territories - three regions in Germany, the Atlantic coast in France, the wider metropolitan areas of Barcelona, Minsk and Poznan, and Belgrade within the Danube and Sava basins of Southeast Europe - in order to test strategic activities under the concept of "living laboratories". The final result of the project will be the maps with active data and results, along with models and guidelines which have been successfully implemented and tested in practice.

The Center for the Promotion of Science is a regional project hub and coordinator of activities in several Southeast European countries - from Croatia to Romania, and from Albania to Hungary. In the countries of the region, in cooperation with local partners, research and education centers, state institutions and NGOs, the Center will organize numerous meetings, workshops and seminars in order to define the framework of the TeRRIFICA project and then test the proposed models and solutions through action.

The common denominator and guideline for work in Southeast Europe is closely linked to water and its many manifestations threatened by climate change - pollution, management, droughts and floods, water biodiversity in the Danube and Sava basins. In such a context, Belgrade will serve as the focal point of the project for Southeast Europe.
