CPN hosted a panel titled ”The Future of Science in Serbia”. It was held on Thursday, April 17, at the CPN Science Club, and it was initiated by the Institute of Physics in Belgrade.
More than 60 representatives of the leading scientific institutions of Serbia attended the discussion that raised the issue of scientific reforms.
The representatives of SASA, a number of deans from different Faculties, institute directors and many national committee representatives discussed science and its significance to economic and social recovery of Serbia.
On behalf of CPN, the host of the event, the visitors were greeted by Aleksandra Drecun, CPN Director. Afterwards, Director of the Institute of Physics in Belgrade, PhD Aleksandar Belić, spoke about the motives and the background of the consensus adoption.
PhD Vladimir Bumbaširević, Rector at Belgrade Univerisity, PhD Miroslav Vesković, Rector at University in Novi Sad, and Dorđe Šijački, a Scholar from the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, discussed the current state of science.
After a short debate, PhD Aleksandar Bogojević, from the Institute of Physics in Belgrade, addressed the audience. He presented a short video regarding the platform of scientific and technological development in Serbia, in ten crucial points, which could serve as a base for a wider social consensus.
Bogojević used the opportunity to clarify the following theses: the dissemination of knowledge as a condition for the country’s recovery, national base of knowledge as a sum for all the scientific research in our country, science as a part of the European cultural space and as groundwork for education, public wellbeing, and prerequisite for country’s security. It has also been mentioned that science is a vital part of a national identity.
He also pointed out the necessity to connect the representatives of the science community and to build society’s confidence in scientists and the scientific system.
It has also been stressed, during the debate, that the Institute of Physics started the initiative to allow scientists to present their suggestions, and to make it easier for the decision-makers to have a better view on the current situation in the areas of science and technology in our country.
After the presentation of the basic theses of the platform, representatives embarked on a constructive discussion, where they reached a conclusion that this panel is just a first step in attempt to bring the Serbian science community together, in order to further discuss the topic that has such a great influence on society.
